1897 Bickford Dollar HK-834. Aluminum, brass center.
Dana Bickford of New York City, upon returning from a visit to Europe, where he experienced the then-usual difficulty in exchanging money, submitted to Mint Director Dr. Henry Linderman several designs for a token to promote universal exchange rates among major currencies of the world to be standardized for gold and silver. This variety displays a mound on the lower obverse that reads GOLD AND SILVER. Listed in the Hibler-Kappen reference as "very rare," 21 to 50 pieces known. Very rare !
