Description
Very rare, MS61 S.F. Earthquake HK-340 Silver (Clock Tower variety), reeded edge issue is for sale. Struck in 1906 to commemorate America's most destructive earthquake ever, its design accurately depicts two of the most iconic images captured of that epic tragedy (photos 3 and 4 - not included with sale). Listed as R-7, with only 2 graded higher in MS62 at NGC. Over the years that NGC and PCGS have so far existed, only 5 HK-340's have been graded mint state by NGC - not counting any possible re-submissions, and none in mint state by PCGS. This example has been in my collection and off the market for a number of years, and it could well be many more years before any other mint state example is made available, in any venue. It has the look of a higher grade, with nice, full cartwheel luster and original, un-tampered with surfaces. Only held back from what would probably be a significantly higher grade by a small, light scrape in the reverse field to the left of the City Hall tower. I'd venture to guess that this example is probably as eye appealing, if not more so, than the mere 2 examples graded higher.Auction records on this issue, as expected, are very sparse. Just 2 are listed at Heritage - an AU55 which sold for 3.75 in 2014 and an Unc. Details (improperly cleaned) which sold for 9.50 in 2011. Sure to please, it's an unusual opportunity for a fortunate SCD collector to obtain an original, attractive, rare and desirable SCD. Likewise, an opportunity for serious collectors of rare San Francisco Earthquake historical items and memorabilia. Of course, the item listed is the exact item you will receive, and will be shipped USPS priority and insured for full sale price, signature required.
