    Description
    This is one of the
    "So-Called Dollars"
    or Medals from the
    "Panama-Pacific Exposition"
of 1915. It was held in San Francisco, California to mark the opening of the Panama Canal. Called a
    "Louisiana State Dollar"
in the So-Called Dollar book, it is listed there as Rarity 4.
(201 to 500 pieces thought to exist).
Start at sea level or zero, then climb 375 feet up a mountain and plant a flag. Walk 1800 feet,
    (6 football fields)
slightly downhill, to a point still 325 feet high and plant another flag. Then get out your shovel and dig down to zero from both flags, and make your ditch 60 yards across at the zero level. Now, do that for the next NINE MILES. That's what it took to dig the tough part of the Panama Canal.
Work on the canal, which began in 1881, was completed in 1914, making it no longer necessary for ships to sail the lengthy Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America or to navigate the dangerous waters of the Strait of Magellan. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut made it possible for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in half the time previously required.
Weight: 20.85 Grams, 39 Millimeter. Bronze.

    Obverse:
PANAMA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION • SAN FRANCISCO 1915 •
    smaller:
LOUISIANA BUILDING • The Exposition building.
It's about fifty miles through the canal, they used some of the dirt from the cut through the mountains to build a dam that created a huge lake and made a good portion of the 50 miles navigable. But they still had to dig through the continental divide and they had to do it with turn of the last century technology. An amazing feat.
    Reverse:
FOR LOUISIANA EXPOSITION FUND • UNION JUSTICE CONFIDENCE • The State Seal of Louisiana showing a Pelican and three nestlings. • The old Louisiana State Capital building. It was replaced in 1932.
These were originally sold to help raise funds for the expense of mounting Louisiana's exhibit at the Exposition.
    The
    "Dollar"
    :
    A veteran. Originally an
    “Antiqued Bronze”
finish. The hole probably turned it into a watch or key fob and it again probably got cleaned while it was being used as such. Then it got set aside someplace for a hundred years. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
