    Description

Massive Oct Slug Pioneer Days of California '49 / Eureka / Eagle 1850 Token.
Very nice, large, heavy Medal or pendant. Struck in the shape and general style of the famous "Pioneer" Gold "Slugs" that were made and used by the "Forty-Niners" during the "Gold Rush Days" in California. The reverse is quite different however, being a duplicate of the front. The original "Slugs" were produced by the "United States Assay Office" in San Francisco during 1851 and 1852. They had a rather simple "Target" pattern on the reverse and where this one says "We Trust" on the ribbon above the eagle, I understand that the originals had either .880, .887 or .900 denoting the fineness of the gold.Weight: about an ounceGoldtone - maybe plated but nothing to note that but I don't see wear or the like.Obverse: MOMENTO OF FAMOUS CALIFORNIA FIFTY DOLLAR GOLD SLUG, USED BY THE PIONEERS • 1850 • UNITED STATES OF AMERICA • WE TRUST. • FIFTY DOLLS. • Eagle with Shield. Note the shield is made to look worn.Reverse: Same as aboveThe Medal: B ig, a bit ove 1.5 inches across, heavy, impressive piecevintage so some spots, marks and tarnish and can use a light cleaning but I did not want to change it from how I found it in an estate.See the pictures and judge for yourself.
